OTAGO DANCE

ASSOCIATION

ABOUT

about oda

Otago Dance Association is a student-run club that was formed in 2013, with the purpose of providing accessible dance classes to everyone. We offer weekly classes during the University of Otago semesters, as well as holding numerous social, performance, and competitive events.  Check out our timetable here.

Whether you're a beginner or experienced dancer, choreographer, or teacher, you are welcomed with open arms to our inclusive club! Want to know more about our team? Check out our executive team members here.

Wanna learn more about our ODA executives? Check them out here!

Better yet, if you want to read about what our amazing ODA members are getting up to, check out our blog! Over there we post about our member's recent achievements within the dance community, whether that is through the ODA or not.

ODA allows for our members to develop their confidence within performing, teaching and choreographing, which helps them in expanding their dance portfolio. So why not highlight their achievements! Check out what our team is getting up to all over New Zealand right here!

OUR CLASSES

OUR CLASSES

Our classes are run in an open format, with every class starting with a warm-up and stretching, before learning a short piece of choreography, filming, and finally a cool-down.

We offer classes in three main styles: hip-hop, contemporary, and jazz. We offer other styles such as heels, musical theatre and ballet as pop up classes throughout the semester.
Classes are offered at beginner, advanced, and open levels. Beginner classes are best suited to those new to the style, or who are returning to dance after a long break. Advanced classes assume a level of 2+ years of dance experience. Open classes are, as they say, open to anyone, regardless of ability. However, everyone is welcome to attend any class and we encourage dancers to step out of their comfort zones.

All our classes are open-access, so if you want to try one out, just come along! We don't require you to be at every class, just come when it suits you. If you've got teaching experience or would like to become an ODA volunteer teacher, chat to one of the ODA Committee members at class.

Want to see what we have been up to in classes? Check out our youtube page here. We post all of our weekly classes here so there's always new content to enjoy.

ODAPT

ODAPT

PerformANCE TROUPE

The ODA performance troupe is a group of talented ODA members who perform around Dunedin and the rest of New Zealand.

Annual auditions are held for a position within the troupes. We offer performance opportunities for those who specialise in contemporary/jazz as well as hip-hop. Head on over to our executive's page to see more about our troupe leaders!

The ODA performance troupe has had the privilege of performing at numerous events throughout the years. This includes but is not limited to performing for James Camerons "Challenging the Deep" exhibition at the Otago Museum, numerous field performances for the Highlander's home games at Forsyth Stadium, and representing KW Footwear for Queenstown's Fashion for a Cure for Breast Cancer research (which helped raise $94,264.00!)

If you are wanting the opportunity to expand your performance history, keep an eye out for our next auditions which are generally held at the start of first semester every year!

SOCIAL

SOCIAL EVENTS

ODA is not only a group of dancers but a supportive community of friends. We run several social events throughout the year, from our open day to our end of year party. Common events include BYO dinners, picnics, quiz nights, and of course our wine and cheese!

Many of us have found life-long friends through ODA, and we are an association that does not discriminate—we just want everyone to dance.

Have a look through our previous event photos and keep an eye out for any future ODA member events!
